The Beginning of a New Story

Newborn and maternity photos from J&D's Photography capture adorable glimpses into your life as your family grows. Read on to discover how we can capture your story together!

Timing & Location

Maternity photos are most comfortably taken around 6–7 months. I love to capture maternity photos outdoors, even in winter! You can also choose indoor photos of just the mom-to-be with backgrounds and dramatic lighting.

Newborn photos are typically taken when baby is 4–10 days old (the ideal time to get those sleepy, curled up poses). Newborn photos can be taken in your home or our in-home studio using backdrops.

Book Your Session

Get started by contacting me to book your photo sessions. It's important to set up newborn photos prior to your baby's birth, during your second trimester if possible!

Outdoor maternity photos are scheduled during "golden hour," the last few hours before sunset. Newborn sessions are generally scheduled in the morning. The date is tentative, since the actual date will revolve around whenever your bundle of joy arrives!

Choosing the Right Session

You can choose between a Classic or Extended session for maternity and newborn photos. The difference between those sessions is simply the amount of time, and therefore the number of photos you'll receive. I recommend the Extended session when your photos will include older child(ren), a pet, or twins, but it is entirely up to you!

Every session includes a specific number of high resolution digital files and personal use rights to your photos. For families with older siblings, Extended sessions are preferred to allow enough time to capture great shots.

Inspiration

Next, we'll set up a brief consultation to talk about what you'd like to capture. To create the perfect photos for your family, we will go over props, locations, and fun ideas.

If you're looking for ideas, check out my newborn and maternity inspiration boards on Pinterest! I love to be creative and try new things.

How to Prepare for Photos

What to Wear

  • Start by checking out my Pinterest board on what to wear in photos
  • Choose solid colors or simple patterns
  • Coordinate the family by choosing outfits that work well together, rather than matching perfectly

How to Pose

Striking the perfect pose can be hard! Check out these tips on posing to feel more prepared and confident, but know that I will take the time during your session make sure everyone looks their best.

During Your Session

You can stay and watch or leave the room for a bit while I capture the photos. If you want to use the time to take a shower or catch a nap, that’s totally fine!

Feel free to ask questions or bring up any concerns / requests during your session. I am always flexible! Your photos are all about you and your family.

Tips for Newborn Sessions

What to Prepare

  • A pacifier! Even if you don't plan to use one in general, it can make a huge difference in helping baby stay calm and sleepy for the photos.
  • Any outfits or sentimental items (such as a blanket or stuffed animal) that you'd like included in the photos

Before Your Newborn Session

  • Dress baby in loose clothes that snap or zip closed, rather than something that needs to go over baby's head to avoid waking him or her up
  • Try to keep baby awake for at least an hour before the session to help him or her feel nice and sleepy for the photos
  • About 30 minutes before the session, loosen up the diaper and clothing to reduce red imprint marks on baby’s skin
  • Fill up that tummy by breastfeeding or offering a bottle right before we get started
